What Garage Doors in Mississauga Have to Stand Up To
We’re going to start by telling you something that you already know: Mississauga is not quite like anywhere else in Canada. It has all of the elements of a big city, combined with a frozen tundra.
Being a garage door in Mississauga is a particularly tough job. They’re asked to perform under unruly conditions while performing quickly and reliably so their owners can hurry off to catch the Go Train or drive to work in the morning.
These unsung heroes of your home have to deal with more than the average garage door. Here’s a look at what they have to face.
Bitterly Cold Winters
As we have already mentioned above, the average Mississaugan often feels like they’re getting the worst of both worlds, weather-wise. It’s definitely got that big-city-feel. Lots of people (It’s Canada’s 6th largest city, actually, with a population of +800,000), lots of pavement, lots of cars, and a high density of buildings all combine to make things hot and humid in the summer.
However, over the winter they can often feel like they live in a small community in Northern Ontario. They tend to get a touch more snow than their neighbours in Toronto, with over 63 cm of snow in January 2019 alone. The city also gets those damp and fierce winter winds right off the lake that feel like they’re cutting right through your jacket.
High Heating Bills
What does this mean for you’re garage door? It means the winters are absolutely brutal for them. They have to stand up to cold rain, snow, ice pellets and wind pounding on them relentlessly.
It also means that if you have a garage door with a lower R-value, your garage is going to be only slightly warmer than the outside. Your home’s heating system is going to have work even harder, which can send your utility bills skyward.
If you have a bedroom or a home office that shares a wall with the garage, you may find that you have a harder time keeping it as warm as the rest of the house. You may have even had to resort to power-sucking space heaters.
A Need for More R-Value
In this climate, you might want to consider an insulated garage door. They have a much higher R-value to keep the cold out and keep more of the heat in. If you have never had to buy one, you will soon see that there are lots of residential garage doors to choose from and many of them are insulated.
Insulated garage doors pretty much come in polystyrene (styrofoam) and polyurethane (spray-foam). Polyurethane garage doors will have a higher R-Value.
These doors will cost a bit more (sometimes as low as $100.00 more), but you will find that you can easily recoup that money in energy bill savings in this type of climate. Also, it’s worth noting that if you’re looking to sell or “flip” your home, a new garage door has the highest return-on-investment of any home improvement.
Rough Winters are Tough on Garage Doors
The older your door is, the more likely it is to be affected by a brutal winter. This is particularly true if you have an older door made of traditional wood. Wood looks great, but it simply can’t compare to modern materials when it comes to weatherproofing.
Wood is susceptible to warping, cracking, and rotting from damp weather with extreme shifts in temperatures over the year. That means it’s going to have a tough time closing completely, or its overall structural integrity could actually fail. This can obviously be very dangerous.
Of course, you may have to make a call for garage door services in Mississauga even if you have a newer door. Even modern doors need maintenance to keep operating their best in this type of climate. This is why we offer 24/7 residential garage door repair services to everywhere in the GTA.
They Also Feel the Heat in the Summer
Summers in Mississauga also punish garage doors. They have to face the hot sun all day, which can cause fading of the door’s finish. You may notice your door’s colour getting a bit lighter every summer and further away from the colour you originally picked, particularly if you have a wood door that requires staining or painting.
The damp heat is also very tough on wood. It contributes to all the rotting and warping that we mentioned earlier, and can also include termites or other insects in the summertime.
Garage Doors That Keep Mississauga’s Homes Safe
Like any big city, Mississauga’s families want to feel safe. They will invest heavily in locks, home security, and monitoring technology, but they may sometimes forget about securing their garage door.
Maybe you’ve seen the recent news stories about thieves gaining access to an entire home by using a garage door openers left in unlocked cars. You can avoid this threat completely with a Wi-Fi enabled garage door opener, and turn your smartphone into your secure remote. This means your remote is safely away from thieves and on your person, or in the home, at all times.
You can also use this technology to monitor any activity going on with your garage door. This means that you can get notified at work when you’re kids get home safely from school, or when someone may be trying to gain access to your door while you’re away.
